Governor Corzine remains in critical but stable condition after he was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident on the Garden State Parkway.Corzine underwent emergency surgery on his broken leg at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Doctors said he had several additional injuries: a femur bone broken in two places that had lacerated his skin, a broken sternum, six broken ribs on each side, a head laceration and a minor fracture ona lower vertebrae. He did not have any brain or spinal damage and doctors stressed the injuries were not considered life-threatening.The governor was placed in the hospital's trauma intensive car unit after his surgery. He was sedated and being given pain medication. Additional operations are scheduled for Saturday and Monday.Senate President Richard Codey (D) took over as acting governor due to Corzine's injuries and will serve indefinitely. Doctors said it will be days before Corzine can resume his duties as governor and months before he can walk normally.Police said they are looking for the driver of a red pickup truck that was driving erratically around 6 p.m. on the right side of parkway. Officials said the red pickup truck caused a white car to swerve, which then caused the Chevy Tahoe that Corzine was riding in to crash into the guard rail. The Tahoe came to rest with its back end over the top of the rail.State trooper Robert Rasinski was also brought to the hospital with minor injuries. Corzine was on his way to meet with Don Imus and the Rutgers women's basketball team at the governor's mansion.
