The genetic company 23andMe has been approved to screen gene variants linked to certain cancers.
The company recently advertised that its latest test can help find gene variants linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. The company was also approved to screen for breast cancer.
But while some New Jersey residents say that they are interested in the tests, some doctors urge caution.
“The testing done by 23andMe is good testing, but it’s not really comprehensive,” says Dr. Arnold Pallay. He recommends getting your personal physician involved.
“They can really help you to be sure that which you’re reading is accurate, first of all, and applicable to your own personal health,” Pallay says.
Pallay also recommends everyone go for their annual health checkups.
23andMe claims that its genetics reports are backed by science. More information can be found at the
company’s website.
