The body of an Army private from the Bronx is back in the borough for his funeral services.
U.S. Army Pvt. Abdul Latifu was killed during an altercation at
Fort Rucker in Alabama on Jan. 10, just a week after Latifu’s 21st
birthday. Pvt. Brian Jones is currently in custody and is being charged
with murder.
Both Jones and Latifu were attending the air traffic control operator course.
The Latifu family and loved ones gathered outside Yankasa Masjid
mosque as his casket arrived. The family says they are still calling for
justice and answers from the Army.
“My brother does not fight,” Mohammed Latifu, brother of Abdul
Latifu,
told News 12 last week. “I have never seen my brother fight, his
whole 20 years of life that I have known him… for you to say he got
into an altercation with somebody, and he suffered a head injury and
later pronounced dead at the hospital, that is some BS."
He said the family was "still stuck" without answers 13 days after his brother's death.
Pvt. Latifu's final resting place will be at Forest Green Park Cemetery in New Jersey.
