A Paterson councilman has been arrested for setting off a fire alarm in the basement of city hall without an emergency.

Luis Velez, 58, is charged with creating a false public alarm.

Prosecutors say he pulled the alarm nearly a year ago, following the Dominican Day Parade, forcing the building to be evacuated.

Velez represents the city’s Fifth Ward and is currently running for mayor.

His attorney claims the charges are politically motivated.
