Emergency crews spent hours cleaning up a major highway mess after a five-car pileup triggered a significant diesel fuel spill on the Interstate 95 express lanes in Leonia.
First responders were dispatched to the I-95 express lanes yesterday at approximately 11:13 a.m. following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
Fire officials arrived at the scene to find five vehicles tangled in the express lanes. While crews initially focused on securing the crash site and handling general debris cleanup, they quickly discovered a secondary hazard.
An estimated 40 gallons of diesel fuel had breached the roadway, leaking directly into a highway storm drain and dripping down to the area underneath the New Jersey Turnpike infrastructure.
The environmental threat required an immediate, specialized response. Teams from Bergen County Hazmat and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority were rushed to the scene to contain the spill and mitigate the environmental impact both on the interstate and below the overpass.
Emergency units operated for more than two hours, managing traffic control and hazardous cleanup across multiple levels of the roadway structure.
The cause of the initial five-car crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed if any injuries were sustained in the collision.
