A volunteer fire department in Hunterdon County is looking to recruit new members by offering free room and board.
The firehouse in Oldwick, a section of Tewksbury Township, is less than 10 years old and features state-of-the-art rescue equipment. The downstairs level of the fire house contains bunk beds, a community lounge and a shower. There is even free laundry facilities.
"We always knew we had issues getting and retaining members," says Pet Melick with the volunteer squad, "We put the space to good use. We built two bunk rooms and a living area in the basement of the firehouse. We are looking for young, qualified volunteers."
To qualify for the rent-free living arrangement, a volunteer must be an active member of the department, participate in the drills and training and complete some light duties around the house.
Melick says that it is a perfect opportunity for a college student or someone just looking to save up and move out on their own.
Three out of the four spots are still available. More information can be found at the
department's website.
