An open house was held Sunday at Fort Hancock as the government looks to lease some of its property.
The National Park Service, which owns the land, is starting a pilot program to lease some of its buildings as private homes, bed and breakfasts or nonprofit organizations.
The waterfront properties will be free of charge for at least the first few years, according to officials.
John Harlan Warren, a Sandy Hook External Affairs officer, says that while the units are not quite move-in ready, the buildings are structurally sound and have great waterfront locations.
Fort Hancock was built in the late 1800s, and served the military until the 1970s.
Organizers say they will be accepting applications for the pilot program through April 17.
