Forked River man dies after being caught in rip current

The crew performed life-saving maneuvers and had him transported to area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A 28-year-old Forked River man died after becoming stuck in a rip current Friday in Ship Bottom, according to authorities.

Ship Bottom police, fire department as well as the Surf City fire and EMS responded to four individuals caught in the rip current at approximately 2:28 p.m.

Upon arrival, three out of the four individuals were already on the shore. The fourth, David Maldonado-Ocelotl, was still missing in the surf.

He was later found by fire rescue crews unconscious and not breathing.

The crew performed life-saving maneuvers and had him transported to area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
