Bloomfield celebrated the opening of a new playground and community center Friday.
The playground is the first of its kind in Essex County – one that is completely handicap accessible. The playground has ramps and platforms to make it more accessible. It also has rubberized surfaces in case anyone falls.
Most ADA-compliant playgrounds are typically separated from standard playgrounds, which is what makes the one in the Bloomfield so different.
"This one actually incorporates handicap accessibility into the standard equipment,” says Lorrie Sciabarosi with Comito Architects. “So when you look at it, it doesn't look any different. It doesn't look like it's for a child with a disability or a child without a disability. It really incorporates anyone. Anyone can be a part of this."
Lt. Gov. Shelia Oliver was on hand for the grand opening in Watsessing Park.
