(04/20/06) NEWARK ? Residents and firefighters in Newark say the growing number of broken hydrants in the area is creating a dangerous situation.
Firefighters attempted to extinguish flames on Hillside Avenue Wednesday night, but the hydrant near the fire wasn?t working. Firefighters had to run a hose down the street in order to get water. Residents say that type of scenario is becoming all too common in the city.
According to residents, fires in the area have become more damaging due to the additional time it takes for firefighters to find a hydrant. Representatives of the water department directed News 12 New Jersey to speak to the mayor?s press office. Those officials have not returned calls for comment.
