Fire partially destroys nearly 50-year-old Jersey Shore restaurant

Schneider's Restaurant, an iconic family establishment in Monmouth County known for its homemade German food, was partially destroyed over the weekend after a fire broke out. 
Witnesses said the blaze began around 4:30 a.m. Saturday at the Avon-by-the-Sea restaurant on Main Street. Firefighters were able to put it out relatively quickly, but the damage to the building was extensive.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire in under investigation, but officials said they suspect it began in the kitchen. 
Loyal customers came to the restaurant Saturday morning to see what was left of their favorite food spot. Many said they hope the owners will rebuild Schneider's. 
"It's like a piece of our childhood," said Therese Savoy. "You always go to Schneider's with your family."
The family-run business started in Newark in the 1960s before the family moved it to Avon-by-the-Sea in 1970. Schneider's is best known for its homemade ice cream, strudel and schnitzel.
The owners took to Facebook Sunday night to post a messages, saying they hope to reopen at some point.
