A high-rise apartment complex filled mainly with senior citizens was evacuated following a fire on the 10th floor.
The fire happened shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Brookside Community Apartments on Mill Street.
According to the police chief, the 10th-floor apartment was fully engulfed. The woman who lives there was not home at the time, the chief said.
Two people were taken to the hospital - one for smoke inhalation and another for a different reason. Both are expected to be OK, according to officials.
News 12 New Jersey spoke with a woman who said she opened her door and saw so much smoke, she couldn't see the hallway.
“We saw the flames and everything and it was nuts and then I started banging on everyone's doors,” says Lisa Pickett. “A lot of them can't come down, they have walkers, and they don't come out unless they know for sure so I was banging on doors to get everybody out."
Officials are working to determine the cause of the fire.
