Fire crews are working hard to get the Jones Road Wildfire under control.
There are still about a dozen structures that are threatened but there are no evacuations.
Fire officials say that 13,250 acres burned and the fire is 50% contained.
Officials say they expect that acreage number to grow before reaching full containment which may not be until over the weekend, when we get some rain.
The containment area crews have is 15,410 acres, an impressive size for an already busy wildfire season.
"This time last year we were at 310 wildfires for a total of 315 acres burned," said Bill Donnelly of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. "This year the same period. We're at 662 wildfires with 16,572 acres burned."
"This could very well end up being the largest wildfire in New Jersey in 20 years," said Commissioner of NJ Environmental Protection Shawn LaTourette.
The Jones Road Wildfire started Tuesday morning at 9:45 a.m. according to New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
The fire was detected by the Cedar Bridge Fire Tower in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area.
Arriving crews said it was only 10 to 20 acres, but because it's so dry that fire grew rapidly.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Until the fire is out, there will continue to be smoke.
