Fire breaks out at Marcal Paper Mill for 2nd time in a month
A fire broke out at the Marcal Paper Mill for the second time in less than a month.
The fire was reported around 11 a.m. Tuesday at the factory near Summit Avenue and River Drive in Elmwood Park. An employee spotted the smoke and called the fire department.
“They had a person in there on fire watch. He saw some smoke, some fire. He called 911,” says Elmwood Park Police Chief Michael Foligno.
Foligno says that crews were able to put out the fire quickly. It is believed that a dryer inside one of the only buildings that remains standing caught fire. This dryer is used to dry pulp used to make paper.

Only two people were inside the building at the time. They were not hurt. Foligno says that the damage to the building was minimal.
A fire at the paper plant on Jan. 30 destroyed much of the factory, which had stood in Elmwood Park for 80 years.
"It's totally not anything compared to that,” Foligno says. “It brought back memories from a few weeks ago - not good ones - although we handled that very well.”
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the arson unit were called in out of caution. The cause is still under investigation, but Foligno says there is reason to believe it was electrical.
