A fire at a Bayonne senior apartment complex on Tuesday morning killed one resident and injured at least 11 people, including eight police officers.

Officials say the fire started around 7:30 a.m. at the Post Road Gardens Center, an 11-story senior apartment complex on Avenue A.

When fire crews got to the third-floor apartment where the fire started, they say 82-year-old Irene Clark was found unresponsive in her bedroom. She was taken to Hudson Regional Hospital in Bayonne where she died.

"From the knee down, it looked like she was burned," a witness said.

Three residents and eight police officers were treated for smoke inhalation. All have been released from the hospital, according to the authorities.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office says no foul play is suspected.

Donna Lucas, a senior resident, says she is grateful the Bayonne Fire Department woke her up.

"If they didn't kick on my door, I would've slept right through it," she said.
