Paterson animal control officers have instituted a trap, spay-neuter and release policy to chip away at the city's feral cat population.
Paterson Chief Animal Control Officer John DeCando says he catches about 30 feral cats per month.
"It's very important to have them spayed or neutered," he says. "If not, we won't be solving the problem. They'll be producing, producing, producing ? and just making matters worse."
DeCando's office works with a private group to have the animals trapped, vaccinated and fixed.
Animal control officers urge residents to report feral cat sightings immediately, as the animals pose health risks to household pets and the public.
