A Bedford-Stuyvesant family remembered Christine Fields on Wednesday night.
Fields died while giving birth during an emergency C-section at Woodhull Hospital one year ago.
Fields leaves behind her three children, her fiancé and her mother.
Her fiance tells News 12 his heart is broken, but raising their children has been the greatest joy for him.
"It hasn't been easy," said Jose Perez. "A lot of people tell me, 'hey, you're doing a great job, you're here and you're advocating,' but honestly, I'm tired, and just doing my best."
According to city health records, Black women are more than four times likely to die from childbirth complications than white women in New York.
The family has a pending lawsuit against the hospital, which is run by New York Health systems.
In the past, Woodhull Hospital has told News 12 the maternal mortality rates among women of color unacceptable and they are committed to addressing this disparity.
