Firefighters responded this morning to a fire at a two-story home in Kearny.
Crews were able to contain the fire, but the home on Argyle Place is badly damaged.
"First company arrived on scene found a well involved fire, encompassing two floors. Our members tried to make entry to the building but were driven out by the amount of fire," says Kearny Fire Chief Joseph P. Mastandrea. "Defensive operations commenced to limit the fire to spreading to nearby exposures and to extinguish the fire. The occupants and family pet were able to self-evacuate prior to the fire department arrival."
News 12's Lauren Due spoke with the grandfather of the two sisters who were home at the time of the fire. He says the mom was out-of-state. The grandfather says one of the sisters was sleeping and another was coming home from work. When she got home, she noticed a fire had broken out at the back of the house.
The two sisters were able to get out safely.
Mastandrea says the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious and looks to have started in the back of the house.
