Police: 1 dead, 1 injured in Fair Lawn pedestrian strike

Police say both victims were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. They say Matthew Ritter later died from his injuries.

Two men were struck by a car Sunday night - one fatally - in Fair Lawn, police say.

It happened near Maple Avenue and Cedar Street around 7:30 p.m. Police say Wyckoff residents John Ritter, 61, and Matthew Ritter, 30, were crossing Maple Avenue when a car hit them.

Officials say both victims were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. They say Matthew Ritter later died from his injuries.

The driver was identified as an 81-year-old man from Hawthorne, according to police. No summonses have been issued.

Maple Avenue was closed for several hours. The crash remains under investigation.
