Democratic Senator Robert Menendez has defeated Republican Tom Kean Junior in the U.S. Senate race Tuesday.
The national GOP and Democratic parties had pumped millions into the U.S. Senate race in New Jersey to help their candidates air ads pounding their messages. Both candidates' campaigns attacked the other. Kean had claimed Menendez was corrupt. Menendez based his campaign on voter discontent over the Iraq war. He had charged that Kean would rubber-stamp President Bush?s policies.
Menendez, a former congressman, was picked for the Senate seat by Governor Jon Corzine when Corzine moved to the Statehouse.
