NJ Transit commuters may soon have to dig a little deeper into their pockets.
NJ Transit's outgoing Executive Director George D. Warrington is recommending a 10 percent fare hike. If approved, the higher bus and train fares would take effect June 1. The fare hike would help close a budget deficit of approximately $60 million in the agency's proposed $1.5 billion budget. The increase would vary from line to line and the time of day a passenger is traveling.
Warrington says riders should expect fare increases every two or three years from now on. Public hearings on the proposal will take place in February and March. The agency last raised fares in July 2005.
