An exclusive screening of the documentary "The Green Book: Guide to Freedom" was held at Rutgers University's Newark campus.
News 12 New Jersey’s Carissa Lawson was there to help kick things off with a panel discussion.
The event is part of a partnership between Altice USA, the Smithsonian Channel and the NAACP.
More than 300 employees and students attended.
"It was an opportunity to tell these different aspects that we usually don't get to see on screen,” said filmmaker Yoruba Richen.  “Usually we understand or are taught about Black History in a very narrow lense so this gave an opportunity to really expand the conversation."
The documentary debuts this weekend on the Smithsonian Channel. The movie "The Green Book" took home the best picture Oscar on Sunday.
