Exact change toll lanes will soon be eliminated from the toll plazas of the Garden State Parkway.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority says that exact change lanes are currently in use at 11 main toll plazas on the highway. But exact change lanes will be eliminated around Sept. 24.

A spokesperson for the authority says that 37 exact change lanes will be removed because “the coin machines are nearing the end of their useful lives and have become expensive and difficult to maintain.”

Officials also say that not many drivers still use the lanes – opting instead to use E-ZPass. The agency says that in 2017 just under 5 percent of drivers used the coin lanes – 83 percent used E-ZPass.

Drivers who do not have E-ZPass can still pay the $1.50 tolls by using the full services lanes and handing their free to the toll collector.
