Everyday Heroes: NJ Food and Clothing Rescue
A team of Everyday Heroes in northern New Jersey is taking the idea that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to a whole new level.
Each week, the folks at New Jersey Food and Clothing Rescue collect an average of 2,000 pounds of food that would’ve been trashed from stores such as Whole Foods. That food is then redistributed to hundreds of people in need in areas like Newark, Passaic and Wallington.
Despite recently losing its headquarter space, the group is still rescuing food and clothing from all over the state. The director of the group says that they a have helped about 50,000 New Jersey residents over the past year.
“We help people quickly, that are in need,” says director Phil Stafford. “We help with personal hygiene items, food packages and sometimes clothes. We help veterans, seniors, people waiting for services and that have fallen through the cracks.”
The group also runs outreach events where people in need can come get essential items for free.
New Jersey Food and Clothing Rescue is currently looking for a new space from which to operate.
More information about the group can be found on its website.
