Police agencies in Essex County came together Monday to denounce their association with “four cowardice [Minneapolis] cops” involved in the arrest of George Floyd, who died in custody.
Floyd, an unarmed black man, died after an officer was seen on video pressing his knee onto Floyd’s neck during an arrest. The officer seen in the video has been charged with murder. Three other officers were seen standing by while it happened.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose condemned the action.
“What happened in that video on national TV last week, I join Chief [Darnell] Henry of the Newark Police Division and all chiefs and directors of Essex County. We’ve had multiple talks. There is not one time that somebody disputed that it was a despicable, cowardice act by four cowardice police officers. All four should be arrested for being responsible,” Ambrose said.
Officials say that a fatal mistake like this will never be tolerated in Essex County.
