Over 27,000 students in Elizabeth kicked off the new school year with a half day due to the heat Friday.
News 12's Jim Murdoch was at Elmora School No. 12 to welcome everyone back to school.
More than 600 children call Elmora School No. 12 home. School officials went all out to make the day something the students will remember.
The day was filled with many hugs and smiles. Students also got the chance to capture the milestone moments in a photo booth, or with their school mascot.
“It's a wonderful time of the year. My first day of school is my favorite day,” said principal Melissa Kulick.
Eighth grade students told News 12 that they look forward to the new school year and beyond.
“I'm very excited I get to see all my friends again and because I'm in 8th grade, I get to pick what high school I will be in,” said Tremaine Anderson.
“I get to be with all my friends again. I'm learning to go to high school. It's really exciting,” London Garcia.
