A group of Edison police officers bought a town resident a new bike to replace the one that was recently stolen.
Richard Yau, 61, rides his bike to and from work at Walmart in Edison every day. It is his only means of getting around, so he is often seen in the community riding his bike.
The officers say they have seen Yau riding his bike no matter the weather and that he is a good man.
“He’s just a great guy. He’s always smiling,” says Edison PBA president Michael Schwarz
But a few weeks ago, someone stole Yau’s bike, which he keeps chained to a fence while at work. Yau said that the bike was gone but the lock and chain were still there.
Yau went down to the police station to make a report. When officers found out about it, they went above and beyond.
“This is one of those situations where financially he was not able to go out and buy new bike,” Schwarz says. “It was his only means of transportation and we thought it was necessary to help him out.”
The officers took up a collection and purchased Yau a new bicycle for about $200, which they recently presented to him.
Yau says he's making adjustments to it at home and says that it will come in handy once the winter begins.
