An Edison Township crossing guard is credited with saving a family after spotting smoke and alerting residents to a growing fire on March 10.

Lisa Lancia was on duty when she observed smoke coming from the rear of a residence at 835 New Dover Road around 3:30 p.m. According to police, Lancia immediately "sprang into action," banging on the door until she got the attention of those inside.

Edison Police officers arrived on the scene at 3:29 p.m. to find visible flames and heavy smoke coming from the home. Thanks to Lancia's quick intervention, the homeowner and all other occupants were able to evacuate safely before the fire spread.

"Lisa's actions were nothing short of heroic," the Edison Police Department said in a statement. "Edison Township is grateful and thankful to have her on our team."

No injuries were reported to the occupants or emergency responders. Fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control, though the cause remains under investigation.

Local officials praised Lancia for her vigilance, noting that her role as a crossing guard puts her in a unique position to monitor community safety both on and off the crosswalk.
