The eastbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike extension will be closed in Bayonne until at least Thursday evening for emergency repairs, according to the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management.
The repairs are between Interchanges 14 and 14-A on the Newark Bay-Hudson County extension.
In a Facebook post, the Bayonne OEM says that the Casciano Bridge eastbound has been closed and that it involves a "critical structural issue" that is being addressed.
A spokesperson for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority says that road bearings may have been affected by the recent cold temperatures, creating a gap between the bearings and the roadways. This gap could make it unsafe to drive on the highway.
Bayonne OEM says that the repairs are expected to take a least a day and a half and that motorists should plan alternate routes.
Westbound traffic is unaffected.
The extension connects the Turnpike to Bayonne, Jersey City and the Holland Tunnel.
