A local family has filed lawsuits against an East Orange officer, the police department and the city of East Orange after a young girl claims the officer broke her arm.Azjhane Hayes, 12, claims East Orange Police Officer Edward Giles broke her arm in June while she was walking home from school. Police say they were called to the scene on Park Avenue that day when some children were yelling obscenities at a teacher. The latest lawsuit comes a day after three East Orange officers were indicted on charges of assault and official misconduct. Some community activists say there is a pattern of abuse in the East Orange Police Department.?I think a lot of it is question of power,? says activist Larry Hamm, of the People Organization for Progress. ?They obviously have the power and they think they're above the law."East Orange?s acting police chief issued a statement saying recent media reports of excessive force do not substantiate a pattern of abuse. The chief says he will support the officers when they are right and hold them accountable when they are wrong.
