With foster parents adopting more children in the Garden State, the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) is in the midst of an apparent turnaround.
Due to terms of a federal lawsuit, DYFS was supposed to find permanent homes for 1,100 children last year. The agency not only met those expectations, but exceeded them by helping 1,370 foster children find adoptive homes.
A DYFS official says the agency worked harder on focusing on adoption work to help children. DYFS officials add that specialized adoption units were created in all of the 44 offices in New Jersey.
DYFS has been under scrutiny since the death of a Newark boy under its care several years ago.
