A fire at a Passaic County duplex killed a 76-year-old man and injured a firefighter.
The county prosecutor’s office says that Russell Mahan's body was found inside the Paterson home located on the 600 block of East 26th Street. The fire, which began around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, severely damaged the home and also caused minor damage to a neighboring home.
Witnesses told emergency responders that Mahan was trapped inside the building, but that they could not reach him in time. His body was found shortly after the fire was extinguished.
A firefighter suffered a shoulder injury and was treated at a hospital. But no other residents were hurt in the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
