Beaches in Seaside Heights will now close earlier following a deadly incident involving swimmers after lifeguards went off duty.
Mayor Tony Vaz says the town will begin clearing beaches about an hour after lifeguards leave and shutting the gates to prevent more tragedies.
The move comes after a 31-year-old man from Trenton drowned Sunday evening. He was one of five family members who entered the ocean just before 7 p.m.
“This is about safety,” Vaz said. “I don’t care who gets mad at me. I’m closing the beach. If it’s endangerment, I don’t care—sue me.”
Officials say there was a language barrier during the rescue, as the victims spoke Spanish. The town is now looking to add warning signs in Spanish at beach entrances.
