A four-alarm fire broke out in downtown Newark Sunday afternoon, leaving dozens of families homeless.
The fire started on the fifth floor of the Center City Apartments, located on the corner of Broad and West McKinney streets. According to police, everyone made it out of the building, but several residents lost their pets.
Two people were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while several more were treated at the scene for exhaustion. The fire department says it is still counting how many people are displaced.
Residents say they believe the fire was a result of careless smoking, but the fire department won't confirm it.
Displaced families are now being cared for by the Newark Fire Department and the Red Cross.
