About 45 people were forced to evacuate from a multifamily home in Lakewood after a fire broke out on the first floor.
The fire started around 3:30 p.m. Friday inside the home on the 300 block of East Seventh Street. Construction crews were working inside the house when one of the electricians smelled smoke.
Electrician Paul Lugo yelled for everyone to get out. A loud explosion was heard moments after everyone got free of the fire.
Parts of the roof and side of the building collapsed.
Over 100 firefighters from the surrounding area were called to fight the fire. By Wednesday night, crews were still working to put out hotspots.
A Lakewood fire chief tells News 12 New Jersey that fighting the fire was particularly difficult because the home had undergone several renovations and there were "a lot of voids" inside the home.
One of the families that lived inside the home was preparing for a son's wedding, which was supposed to take place at the home this weekend.
No injuries were reported.
