The best boys lacrosse team in New Jersey will be crowned this weekend at the Tournament of Champions.
Don Bosco will be playing against Summit, and for the Ironmen, it would be a storybook ending to an unprecedented season.
“We didn’t know if we were going to have a season at the start of the school year and we started getting worried when we kept getting shutdown in the preseason,” says junior Connor Gorman. “As the season went on, we kept realizing we had something special and we haven’t stopped.”
At 17-0, Don Bosco has been building buzz all season as the top-ranked team in New Jersey.
“We see a lot of the student body at football games and basketball games. But to see them at lacrosse games and to see teachers and faculty and administration, alumni, parents, players – it’s really been so rewarding,” says head coach Brendan Gorman.
It is said that defense wins championships. The top-seeded Ironmen and second-seeded Hilltoppers allow an average of less than five goals per game.
“We’re just grateful for the opportunity to compete against them. They run a zone defense. We’re a zone defense, so if you’re a lacrosse fan in the state, it’s going to be a great game to be at,” says Gorman.
A win for Don Bosco would not only cap off a perfect season, it would also give the team their first Tournament of Champions title in the program’s history.
“It would mean a lot. We work so hard all season just to get here and it’ll be the first one in program history. So it’s going to be something special,” says junior Koleton Marquis.
Don Bosco and Summit will face off in the Tournament of Champions final Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Mount Olive High School.
