A woman was able to escape safely as flames gutted her West Milford home thanks to her dog on Friday.
The fire broke out around 12:45 a.m. on Elm Street, according to West Milford Fire Marshall Michael Moscatello.
When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames, but all the occupants were out of the home.
"The homeowner was alerted to the fire by her dog," Moscatello said in a statement.
Fire crews from all six West Milford fire companies responded to the scene, along with mutual aid crews from surrounding towns, that helped provide coverage while first responders worked to douse the flames. It took first responders about 30 minutes to control the blaze. Crews continued to douse hot spots and remained at the scene until about 4 a.m.
Officials say no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
