A quick-thinking 911 dispatcher is being credited with helping to saves the lives of a mother and child. It was a situation that started in New York and ended in New Jersey on a Paterson street.
On June 30, 911 dispatcher Jessica Pfleger took a 911 call from a woman known only as "Kamisha." The woman said she was allegedly being held captive along with her daughter by her husband.
According to police in Montgomery, New York, Kamisha and her husband Cengiz Demir were visiting family in Buffalo along with Kamisha's 7-year-old daughter a few days earlier. Demir has family in Paterson, so the three of them left Buffalo heading to New Jersey.
Along the way they stopped at a hotel in Montgomery. During the night, Demir allegedly raped the little girl. Kamisha then apparently confronted him about this, and that's when police say he attacked her and locked Kamisha and her daughter inside his cargo truck.
Police say the mother and daughter were locked inside the truck for a day without food or water. Kamisha was able to get a hold of her cellphone and called 911 and connected with Pfleger. In a series of calls, Kamisha was able to tell Pfleger that she was locked in the truck and they were heading to New Jersey.
Kamisha and Pfleger's calls kept disconnecting, so Pfleger quickly started to text Kamisha using her personal cellphone. Through the text messages, Kamisha was able to alert authorities that they were heading to Paterson.
When the trio arrived in Paterson, officers from the Paterson Police Department were there waiting. Demir was taken into custody and faces multiple charges of rape and interstate kidnapping. He is being held in the Passaic County jail.
Pfleger was honored for her actions at the Montgomery Town Board meeting on July 9.
