The New Jersey Devils have traded star player Adam Henrique for a new defenseman and a draft pick.
The Devils
announced Thursday that they acquired Anaheim Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen, 26, and a conditional third-round draft pick in the 2019 or 2020 NHL Draft in exchange for Henrique and forward Joseph Blandisi. The Devils also traded their third-round pick in the 2018 draft.
"In acquiring Sami, we bring on a right shot, top-four defenseman who can play in all situations,” Devils general manager Ray Shero said in a statement.
Henrique posted a message on Twitter that said, “Thank you New Jersey! I’ll never forget you. I hope you’ll never forget me. For now…’It’s over!’” which is a reference to his dramatic goal against the New York Rangers five years ago that secured the Devils’ spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Vatanen represented his home country of Finland in the 2014 Winter Olympics. He will wear jersey No. 45 for the Devils.
