A community is in mourning after a Deptford police officer shot in the line of duty two months ago succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Bobby Shisler died over the weekend. He was shot during a pedestrian stop in March.
A memorial dedicated to the officer continues to grow outside the police station.
“I thought he was going to make it, truthfully. Even being shot in the leg, but there’s a lot more to it,” says Marie Killmer, of Paulsboro.
Dozens of community members came by to pay their respects – some who did not even know Shisler personally.
“Just to show our respects for the officer and teach the kids respect at a young age for the police,” says Steve Cucinotta, of Washington Township.
A pregame ceremony at Deptford Little League honored Shisler, with the hope of comforting his fellow officers.
He is the first officer to die in the line of duty since the Deptford Police Department was formed in the 1960s.
Shisler lived in Deptford most of his life. His family has lived in the town for years and he was well known in the community.
Pat Graham says that Shisler and her grandson Kyle were best friends.
"Him and my grandson, like I said, they were close. When they were little, Bobby used to always like ‘Scooby Doo,’ the cartoon, so Kyle always called Bobby, Scoob…he was just such a great guy,” says Graham.
The community held multiple benefits to help with Shisler’s recovery. But he died on Sunday.
Shisler was conducting a pedestrian stop that turned into a foot chase shortly after. Gunfire then erupted between 24-year-old Mitchell Negron Jr. and Shisler. Negron was pronounced dead at the scene.
Details about this stop have not yet been released. The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General is investigating the shooting. News 12 reached out for an update but did not hear back.
A procession is set for Tuesday morning to transfer Shisler's body from the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office to a nearby funeral home.
