Newark is one of five major New Jersey cities with disproportionately high rates of gun violence, according to data released by New Jersey state police.
Camden, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson and Trenton also lead in New Jersey gun deaths. The five cities make up 10% of the state's population but accounted for nearly two-thirds of the state's shooting victims last year.
Rep. Bill Pascrell is calling for a boost in police funding, but some local leaders and residents are against increased policing.
Community members want local and state governments to fund more resources like after-school programs, mental health clinics and affordable housing.
