Newly released dashboard camera video from the New Jersey State Police shows the moment a state trooper escaped from an oncoming truck. Officials are using it as an example of why New Jersey’s “Move Over Law” is so important.
The video is from an incident in February. It was recorded along Interstate 80 in Allamuchy Township.
Trooper Stephen Lentini was on the scene of a previous crash. He is seen in the video trying to wave off an oncoming truck – warning the driver of the crash scene. But when he realized that the truck wasn’t slowing down, he was able to quickly move toward the guardrail to get out of the way just as the truck crashed into the police vehicle.
Lentini was not hurt.
“I was so grateful. It could’ve ended in such a more tragic way,” says State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan. "Really what touched me most about watching it was his squad mates yelling his name as they ran down that median."
Fellow troopers can be heard on body camera video screaming Lentini’s name as they ran toward the scene. He was able to call back that he was OK.
While Lentini was not injured, this has not always been the case with other incidents.
Trooper Marc Castellano was struck and killed by a passing vehicle on Interstate 195 in Howell in 2010, and Trooper Sean Cullen was struck and killed in 2016 while on Interstate 295 in West Deptford.
This is part of the reason why drivers on New Jersey highways are required to move over to a different lane as they approach an emergency vehicle stopped on the highway if it is safe to do so.
"I just request that all of the motorists in New Jersey focus on the task at hand. Get from [point] A to [point] B. Put the phone down, watch your speed and certainly adhere to that Move Over Law,” Callahan says.
The driver of the truck was given a summons for careless driving. He could face further charges, according to officials.
