One person was killed and two others, including a child, were injured Monday after two vehicles crashed in front of the South Amboy YMCA on Jack O’Leary Boulevard.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said Benjamin Nararrete and his Mitsubishi Outlander were struck outside the YMCA around 5 p.m. as he was attempting to secure his 6-year-old daughter in the SUV. The impact sent Nararrete’s Outlander crashing into the side of the YMCA center.
The prosecutor’s office said Nararrete, 48, of Old Bridge, was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
Patrick Walsh, the driver of the vehicle that struck Nararrete, was also taken to a hospital. The 53-year-old South Amboy resident was considered to be in stable condition Tuesday, officials said.
Nararrete’s 6-year-old daughter was also injured in the crash. Officials said she was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry originally told News 12 New Jersey that a second man was injured, but police said only the girl and Walsh were hurt.
The YMCA canceled evening activities after the crash. The center resumed its regular schedule Tuesday after officials checked for structural damage and deemed the building safe.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective David Keegan of the South Amboy Police Department at 732-721-0111 or Detective Mark Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-4194.
