Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end to summer on the Jersey Shore, and it's also a time for boardwalk businesses and towns to tally weather the season has been a success.
While it may be remembered for heat waves and rainy weekends, beachgoers in Asbury Park were soaking up the end of the season in stride.
At Hoagitos on the boardwalk, business faced a few washouts this year. But that wasn't the worst of it.
"The worst is when the forecast calls for rain, and it doesn't, it comes to be a nice day and people make like other plans -- that does hurt us," says Tim McGevna, of Hoagitos. "But luckily we had a good two weeks during the summer, it was nice and we did good business."
"We did lose some weekends during the month of July and even this month, we lost a couple of big days, but we've been able to be daily customers on a regular basis that keep our numbers pretty good. I think we're overall based on dollars and cents down 5 percent," says Manasquan Beach Manager Wally Wall. "It's all the weather. I mean we can set up whatever we want in this beach, if it rains nobody's going to come."
If you're looking to soak up the last of the season, get to the shore while you still can. In Manasquan, the boards and rubber mats that form the gateway to the beach get cleared away starting at noon on Monday.
