JERSEY CITY (AP) - A Jersey City councilman has been suspended from his job with an agency after questions were raised about whether he was really working.
The suspension of Councilman Khemraj "Chico" Ramchal from the Hudson County Improvement Authority comes after The Jersey Journal found that GPS records from Ramchal's city-owned car showed that he was driving around the city when timesheets indicated he was working for the authority in Newark.
Authority spokesman Paul Swibinski tells the newspaper that officials have contacted prosecutors to consider an independent investigation.
Ramchal is suspended with pay and will have the opportunity for a hearing. The 39-year-old says his attorney advised him "not to comment on a fishing expedition."
Ramchal was recently accused of driving while intoxicated.
