Many veterans in the Garden State are trying to stop Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) from signing a bill they say is wrong.
The bill includes ways to increase flexibility among New Jersey schools and eliminate red tape. Part of the bill would take away the requirement that schools hold activities to observe Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Schools would still be able to voluntarily commemorate the days, but many veterans worry some will opt out.
Veterans feel by not observing those holidays, the students would not be able to learn about the history of the United States. Some veterans say they enjoy going to schools to teach children about why the holidays are so significant. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Corzine says the governor is still reviewing the bill.
