(05/29/07) HOBOKEN ? The possibility of a higher gas tax in New Jersey has fueled an angry response among Garden State commuters.
Governor Jon Corzine is mulling the hike to help pay for mass transit and highway concerns. Currently, New Jersey residents pay only 14 and a-half cents on a gallon. New York and Pennsylvania pay more than 30 cents. With state and federal taxes combined, Garden State residents pay the third lowest in the country.
Not surprisingly, residents aren?t exactly revved up about the possible hike.
?I?m not very happy because I drive to work,? commuter Amanda Manthey said. ?So, it would affect my commuting costs obviously, so I?m not a happy camper.?
Many point out New Jersey residents already pay the highest property taxes and car insurance rates. When it comes to gas, they want to the governor to keep his hands off the taxes.
