Governor Corzine (D-NJ) said "I do" to civil unions in New Jersey Thursday morning.
Corzine signed the civil unions bill into law at the War Memorial in Trenton. The law will recognize civil unions for same-sex couples in the Garden State. The law will also allow same-sex couples the same rights as married couples. Those rights include adoption, hospital visitation and medical decision-making.
The bill was passed by the Legislature on December 14. In October, the state Supreme Court said same-sex couples must have the same rights as married heterosexual couples. The court gave New Jersey lawmakers six months to decide how to ensure those rights.
The law will go into effect February 19. New Jersey will join Connecticut and Vermont as the only states in the country to allow civil unions for same-sex couples. Related Information:
