Shelter seeks foster for dog that tested positive for parvovirus
The Associated Humane Societies in Newark is urgently looking for a foster home or rescue willing to take in a dog that tested positive for parvovirus. "Dallas was recently surrendered and tested faintly positive for parvovirus," AHS Newark wrote on Facebook. "Because he was newly vaccinated, this result could be a false positive — but out of an abundance of caution, we need to house him outside of the shelter while we monitor him." According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, canine parvovirus, commonly known as parvo, attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract of dogs and similar animals such as coyotes, wolves and foxes. The virus can also damage the heart muscle in puppies. The AVMA says all dogs are susceptible to the highly contagious virus, but some are at greater risk than others. Canine parvo cannot be transmitted to humans. As of now, Dallas is not showing any clinical signs of the virus, and AHS says getting him into "a calm home environment will give him the best chance to stay healthy." The shelter is ideally looking for a home with no other pets. Dallas has experience living with children. Any family or rescue able to give Dallas a temporary home can go to Ahscares.org/become-a-foster.
