After hearing Governor Jon Corzine?s (D-NJ) speech at the League of Municipalities conference in Atlantic City Thursday, some local mayors believe this year?s tax reforms might be different.
Special property tax committees presented lawmakers with almost 100 recommendations for property tax relief Wednesday at the conference. Corzine says he mainly supports the plans but wants them to go further. The governor added some of his ideas to the recommendations and says the next step, turning each one into a law, is the most difficult. Corzine added that it?s up to state lawmakers to push the reforms through the votes and to his desk.
During his speech, Corzine said he would like to see a more aggressive consolidation of towns and schools with stronger incentives to it. Corzine also wants an independent statewide comptroller who can make sure there is spending accountability. Finally, Corzine says lawmakers must be willing to take calculated risks in order to make the reforms work now and in the future.
